Promotions firm grows as it wins work from big boys

PURPLE Promotions is a shining example of how small city firms have benefitted from the presence of big corporations in Exeter.

Earlier this week, city MP Ben Bradshaw said the relocation of large businesses to the region has helped smaller firms to prosper.

He was talking about the Met Office — a firm which has certainly helped Purple to develop.

The weather centre announced earlier this year it had awarded the Marsh Barton-based firm a £30,000 three-year contract to supply all its branded merchandise — a far cry from three years ago, when Purple was finding its feet.

The business was set up by Amanda Lyon-Smith, Robin Lyon-Smith and fellow director Rob Palmer. They joined the Federation of Small Businesses to build up contacts, get the best advice and qualify for discounts off services. The Met Office contract is just the latest in a series of developments for the firm.

The company recently bought Hatton Textiles, a producer of promotional towels, which has led to the need for bigger premises, and the directors are now considering future expansion possibilities.

Purple works for some of the biggest organisations in the South West, including Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, Flybe, South West Highways, the city and county councils, Exeter University and College, as well as a host of smaller firms and even individuals.

Mrs Lyon-Smith believes membership of the FSB has certainly played its part in helping generate successes for Purple.

She said: “When we first started the firm, Rob Palmer organised our membership.

You can only have membership in one name.

“We did it for the first couple of years and then there was a lapse. I took it out again last year.

“The guidance you get when you are starting up is great.

“They really point you in the right direction.

“They offer invaluable advice and support. To be honest, we under-use it because we are so busy.

“There is lots more potential there.”
